The Hatchery: site of "East of Fresno"

"East of Fresno" was located in the ruins of a 300 acre abandoned compound in a remote location in the Sierra Foothills community of Badger Creek, California .Originally built to serve as a base for Synanon, and later repurposed as a Black Muslim community and charter school.

Temporary local radio station at the Hatchery , "East of Fresno"

David Sanchez Burr (pictured here) set up a local radio station within the radius of the Hatchery site locale for the duration of the "East of Fresno" show. Visitors and other artists were invited to participate by making sounds on a piezo miked assemblage, recite utopian tracts collected by Burr, or simply perform whatever they wanted over the radio waves.

Artist Laura Napier performed an encounter group using associative texts related to the Synanon and Muslim former occupants of the Hatchery site. Installed on the walls in the encounter room were large paintings by artist and photographer Sally Apfelbaum.

Portable printshop set up by College of the Sequoia students of Matt -Hopson Walker for the East of Fresno opening event.

During the course of the East of Fresno show on site at the Hatchery, artist Matt Hopson -Walker and his students from the College of the Sequoias, in nearby Visalia, California,set up a fully operational printshop, focussing mainly in new methods and uses for large woodcut printing.
